USS Pierre LCS-38 Departure
On a clear November morning at St. Andrews State Park, I had the privilege of witnessing the maiden departure of the newly commissioned USS Pierre (LCS-38) as it passed through the St. Andrews Bay Pass and into the Gulf of America. Viewed from the vantage point of an old World War II gun turret, the scene carried a distinct sense of history—an old coastal defense post observing the Navy’s newest combat ship begin its journey.
Commissioned in Panama City on November 15, 2025, the USS Pierre is the 19th and final Independence-variant littoral combat ship, built by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama. After its departure, the ship set course for its home port in San Diego, marking the start of its service within the U.S. Navy fleet.
As the ship advanced past the shoreline with its crew at stations and a farewell horn echoing across the water, the moment blended ceremony, pride, and quiet reflection. I had the unexpected honor of viewing the departure alongside the ship captain’s uncle and later meeting and chatting with his parents—an encounter that added a meaningful personal connection to the event.
This gallery brings together the photographs captured during that passage—images of a significant milestone framed by the natural beauty of St. Andrews Bay, and the enduring spirit of those who serve.
